Service opportunities Below are some current service opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Many student organizations on campus are also centered around community service, so check our listing of clubs and organizations for more information about how to get involved. We also welcome you to stop by the Appalachian Center for Community Service to learn about service opportunities. Afternoon Academy Volunteers lead activities, tutor, and mentor local sixth-grade students in this innovative after-school program. Located on the E&H campus. Located 15 minutes from campus in Abingdon, VA. Contact: Kent Simcox Email: kentsimcox@naxs.net Phone: 276.628.7053 Bristol Boys & Girls Club This agency is building centered so that the children who participate have a place that they can call home. The center is open after school, during the summer, and on most holidays. Volunteers are needed to provide positive leadership for our youth. The center is located 30 minutes from campus. Contact: Jimmy Clark Email: bbgc@3wave.com Phone: 276.669.8921 Bristol Crisis Center The Crisis Center serves 300-400 people per week from the Virginia Counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Washington, as well as the city of Bristol, VA. Volunteers are needed for hotline counselors, sexual assault companions, and as office assistants. Volunteers are provided appropriate training. Located 30 minutes from campus. Contact: Mona Vinson, Community Educator Email: crisis@usit.net Phone: 276.466.2312 Crossroads Medical Clinic Crossroads Medical Mission is a mobile clinic providing primary medical services to people in southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee who have difficulty accessing the care they need due to geographical or financial barriers. It is a Christian mission partnering with several organizations to provide the services in several locations. Two board-certified family physicians, a missions director and a medical assistant, with the help of several volunteers, deliver quality preventative and urgent care. There is no charge for the medical services and they do not bill for insurance. Services include screenings for diabetes, hypertension, breast and prostate disease, primary care for routine medical problems, minor surgery, some lab work and education. Currently, the mobile medical unit visits Meadowview, Va., on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Contact: Susan Stanley Email: stanlesm@ehc.edu Phone: 276.944.3859 E & H Tutoring Program The E&H Tutoring Program trains students, faculty, staff, and community members to tutor elementary age children. Volunteers are placed in local schools for two hours a week to help children who are performing below grade level develop their reading and math skills. E&H students have the option to receive credit for their tutoring experience by registering for EDUC 116. Contact: Carolyn Wilson, Coordinator of the E & H Tutoring Program Email: crwilson@ehc.edu Phone: 276.944.6877 The Appalachian Center Ecumenical Faith in Action EFIA serves 400 people a week in Washington County, VA. The agency networks people and congregations of all faiths to recruit, train, and match volunteers to provide assistance to people whose circumstances leave them in need. Volunteers are needed to assist older citizens with day-to-day tasks, and to help with the operations of the Stone Soup Food Pantry. Located 15 minutes from campus in Abingdon, Virginia. Contact: Beverly Robinette Email: brobinette@ehc.edu Highlands Educational Literacy Program (HELP) HELP provides literacy instruction for adults in Washington County through a variety of programs, including one-on-one tutoring, and the English as a Second Language Program. Opportunities exist both on and off campus. Contact: Sallie Garrett Email: garrettsj@naxs.net Phone: 276.676.4355 Meadowview Afterschool Program The Afterschool Program provides childcare for elementary age children with a focus on both education and fun, and is located only five minutes from campus. The program runs from 3:00-6:00 p.m. weekday afternoons during the school year. Volunteers are needed to help children with homework, provide tutoring, and help with arts and crafts. Contact: Tal Stanley Email: tastanle@ehc.edu Phone 276.944.6817 Appalachian Center Meal Delivery Program Volunteers deliver lunch and dinner meals to elderly and/or house-bound individuals in the area. Contact: Gloria Surber, Coordinator of Administrative Services Email: gwsurber@ehc.edu Phone: 276.944.6817 The Appalachian Center Migrant Health Network Clinic The Migrant Health network is a volunteer group of physicians, nurses, and other community members working to provide health care services to seasonal farm workers in Southwest Virginia. Volunteers are needed to help with the Sunday clinic held in Emory United Methodist Church (on campus), and to provide childcare during the Sunday clinic and ESL classes. The ability to speak Spanish is an asset but not a requirement. Contact: Mary Bell Boltwood Email: marybell@juno.com Phone: 276.944.4455 River's Way Outdoor Mentoring Program Students in this program mentor area high school students two weekends each semester at River's Way Outdoor Center. Contact: Tom Hanlon Southwest Virginia 4-H Center The 4-H Center (located 15 minutes from campus) serves the 13 counties of Southwest Virginia and 250 people per week during the summer. Volunteers are needed for clerical support, public relations, graphics, and work with youth. Contact: Sandra Fisher safishe3@vt.edu or Chrystle Gates chgates@vt.edu Phone: 276.676.6180 Valley Health Care Center Valley Health Care in Chilhowie, Virginia (10 minutes from campus) is a 207 bed facility providing quality care for nursing home and other residents. Volunteers are needed to visit with residents, lead or assist with group activities, transport residents to and from activities, and assist with various other activities. Training is provided for all volunteers. Contact: Jan Coughlin Phone: 276.646.8911 Washington County Recreation Department The Recreation Department provides a variety of quality, leisure activities for the citizens of Washington County, serving about 300 people per week.
