Counseling Services
At times, life gets in the way of normal change making
it more difficult to deal with the typical college challenges. The loss
of someone close, illness, or high levels of stress are only a few of the
precipitants to symptoms of anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression
are experienced in higher levels among college students than among other
groups. The changes students experience in college are thought to be a major
factor. Learning to manage change and its stress is a large part of controlling
anxiety and depression. Having a trained counselor to help in this process
is important.
Individual Counseling
In this type of counseling you meet individually with the counselor. Initially,
many students prefer this type of counseling because of confidentiality
concerns.
Workshops and Groups
Workshops and groups are great ways to focus on topics such as stress
management, assertiveness, appropriate expression of anger, relationships,
and choosing a career. Workshops usually meet once or twice, while groups meet more often. Workshops
and groups allow you to talk with others who are experiencing similar
issues. They also provide an opportunity to explore different solutions
to problems you may be facing.
Referral Services
When necessary, the counseling office will refer students for services
not available through the college. This may include medication to help
manage depression, anxiety or other problems; assessment services not
available through the college; or other services not currently available.
