Kevin Dudley

Assistant Professor Theatre

Kevin Dudley is Emory & Henry’s resident Scenic, Lighting, & Projection Designer. He is the Head of Design & Production.  

Kevin holds an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Scenic, Lighting, & Projection Design. He also holds a B.F.A. from the University of Utah Department of Theatre’s Performing Arts Design Program. Kevin was a non-traditional student who began his college career in 1983. He left school in 1985 and entered the field of law enforcement.  He retired in 2011 after 25 years of service and made the bold decision to return to school and complete the degree he started a generation ago.

Kevin believes his development as an artist is an on going process. He is a committed life long learner. He stays current with developing digital technologies as well as new art trends in both fine and applied arts. Kevin finds it satisfying to pass on his knowledge to students as they develop skills as designers, collaborators and artists in preparation for careers in fine arts.

Professional Experience

At E&H he has designed scenery and lighting for The Rocky Horror Show, & Eurydice. Kevin designed scenery, lighting and projections for Cabaret & Macbeth. He also designed lighting for Tim Miller’s Rooted and the Miller directed Homebody, …And the World Goes ’Round and [title of show]. His scenic design work was featured in Top Girls.

His designs were seen at the Barter Theatre’s (Abingdon, VA) fall 2017 productions of Friendly’s Fire& Ghost, Ghost Come Out Tonight. He has also designed scenery & projections for Sally McCoy for the upcoming 2018 Barter Fall Season.

Some of his recent designs include scenery for Lady from the Sea and Food & Fadwa (University of Iowa Mainstage Series) Cyrano and Shipwrecked! (Riverside Theatre, Iowa City).  He also designed lighting for Baltimore (Big 10 commission) and Cut & Run (Iowa New Play Festival). Concurrently with his training at Iowa, Kevin was an adjunct instructor at the University of Dubuque (Dubuque, IA) where he designed scenery and lighting for Memphis. 

At University of Iowa, Kevin designed scenery for Crescendo (University of Iowa - Partnership in the Arts); Good Kids, Absurd Person Singular (mainstage productions); Silo Tree (New Play Festival ’15); Swordplay (New Play Festival ’14); Pvt. Wars; and Desire Caught by the Tail; and lighting design for Fur and The Playwright. 

Kevin has designed for several companies in the Salt Lake market. He also co-founded Kensington Theatre Company (South Jordan, Utah), where he served as the resident designer and technical director for 5 seasons (2008-2013) and over 20 productions.  Kevin’s designs include: Spring Awakening, Vernon God Little (University of Utah); Chicago, Jekyll and Hyde (Egyptian Theatre, Park City, Utah); Once Upon a MattressThe Two Gentlemen of Verona,The Last Five Years (Salt Lake Shakespeare); SideshowWhat the Bellhop Saw and August of Osage County (Utah Repertory Theatre).
