Licensure

Emory & Henry College offers nationally accredited programs to endorse pre-service teachers for a license in early childhood, elementary, middle school, art, music, health and physical education, French, Spanish, biology, business education, chemistry, earth science, English, history and social sciences, mathematics, and physics.

Also offered are add-on endorsements in special education, driver education, and theatre.

Teacher preparation at Emory & Henry adheres to the professional requirements for all teachers as specified by the Virginia Department of Education. 

Emory & Henry College teacher preparation program requires assessments that are linked to education courses, and students are required to take and pass all assessments in their area prior to the student teaching semester.

Assessments may be taken during or prior to the associated courses.  Scores are accepted upon presentation of official score reports.  The cost of testing is not covered in course fees.  Registration and fees for testing are the responsibility of the student and students must register themselves on line or by phone.  Please contact Laree Hinshelwood at lhinshelwood@ehc.edu or by phone at 276-944-6218 to answer questions regarding testing and registration.

Teacher Preparation Assessments Required for State Licensure:

Virginia Communications and Literacy Assessment:  All students take the VCLA while enrolled in EDUC 114.  Passing scores on the VCLA are required before a student can register for the student teaching semester.

Praxis I Math:  All students take test 5732 Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics while enrolled in EDUC 114.  A student can be exempt from this test with qualifying scores on the SAT to serve as a substitute test.  For the SAT taken on or after March 1, 2016, you must have a total score of 1170 with at least 580 on the Reading and Writing Section and 560 on the Math Section.  Passing scores on the Praxis I Math are required before a student can register for the student teaching semester.

Praxis II: Each student must take and pass a Praxis II test specific to her or her teaching subject area prior to the student teaching semester.  Passing scores on the Praxis II content area test(s) are required before a student can register for the student teaching semester.

Reading for Virginia Educators Assessment:  Students seeking certification to teach in elementary grades and special education must take and pass the RVE (test number 5306).  Students register and the the RVE while enrolled in EDUC 410/549E.  Passing scores on the RVE are required before a student seeking an elementary or special education endorsement can register for the student teaching semester.

Writing Proficiency Exam:  Interdisciplinary English and secondary English majors must pass the Writing Proficiency Exam or ENGL 199.
