  • APPLY NOW! - England - CORE 240: Theatre and Culture in London - Renaissance to Modernity - Deadline: April 15, 2024

This course explores two unique and related cultural and historical moments in England—the 16th and 20th centuries—through a close investigation of theatre produced during both periods. We will examine how theatrical works from both periods explore the cultural, political, and artistic preoccupations of their day and how current theatrical trends continue to experience and explore these works.

This program will complement what students have learned in their on-campus coursework through an intensive and immersive nine-day study abroad program in London including excursions to York and Stratford-upon-Avon. It aims to provide a hands-on connection to England’s varied theatrical traditions and link them to its literary, architectural, historical, and artistic legacy.

In addition to expanding their knowledge of English theatre, students will further develop their understanding of English art, culture, and history by exploring the political, artistic, and iconographic media present in London’s National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery, British Museum, Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and numerous other sites in London and surrounding areas.

  • APPLY NOW! Costa Rica - SOCI 260 + CORE 240 Studies in Culture - Deadline: April 15, 2024

Costa Rica is a model for environmental sustainability, not only for Central America but for the world. According to the United Nations Environment Program, more than 98% of the energy generated in the country is from renewables, 53% of the country is now forested in efforts to reverse decades of deforestation, and more than a quarter of the land has been converted to national parks and reserves (United Nations Environment Program 2019). The country also has an interesting history in that it was spared some of the worst effects of colonization and ended up developing small- and medium-sized businesses which are the backbone of the agricultural industry (coffee, bananas). The country is also renowned for its commitment to peace—abolishing the military in 1949—and to the democratic process, with consistently high turnouts in national elections. Socially the country is committed to education and has made some strides in gender equality. This educational experience is designed to introduce students to Costa Rica’s cultural and historical background, to explore the effects of ecotourism as an economic development strategy on urban and rural communities, and to investigate how gender and sexuality operate in a country positioned between the Global North and South. This study abroad experience will also allow students to explore the meaning of global citizenship and reflect on their own personal growth as a result of this experience.

In this short-term study abroad experience, we will visit the capital city of San Jose, coffee and chocolate production sites, the Copay Learning Center for a service learning project, and enjoy the amazing natural attractions such as the rainforest, wildlife, and waterfalls!

  • Ecuador - CORE 240: Ecotourism & Recreation - Deadline: April 15, 2024

This course will explore the positive and negative effects of ecotourism, and roll we play as Eco tourists on local peoples and culture. The course will culminate in a 9 day whitewater and outdoor recreation trip to Ecuador. Students will be able to kayak, raft, or ducky (inflatable kayak) through beautiful rivers in Ecuador.

This trip will immerse students in some of the most fascinating culture found in the Americas. Ecuador is a Spanish-speaking country with a rich history dating back to the post-Inca nation. Often winding through miles of lush, high-elevation rainforest, you will discover a feeling of remoteness that has been lost in other countries. We will go out of our way to introduce you to the history and culture of Ecuador, as well as spending time in the communities of the areas we spend time in. Hiking into waterfalls, visiting cacao plantations, coffee farms and community events are part of our week. Spanish is spoken in Ecuador and very little English, so all trip participants will have the opportunity to practice their Spanish.

It will be a great opportunity to experience firsthand how ecotourism and outdoor recreation can come together to allow people from across the world to experience rural areas that would otherwise be inaccessible.

We will split our time between either two or three areas: the Quijos Valley, the Tena region and Baños. The scenery switches between high elevation cloud forest changes to thick, humid rain forest filled with monkeys and birds, lush tropical flowers and a slower pace of life and then back to higher elevation Baños.

  • APPLICATION CLOSED - CORE 240: Ghana - Gateway to Africa - Deadline: November 1, 2023

Ghana is an ideal place for American students to visit if they want to experience Africa. In 1957 it became the first African country to gain its independence from English colonial rule, and in the last 65 years it has established itself as one of Africa’s most stable, safest, and welcoming English-speaking countries.

This class will survey Ghana’s development from the 1960s through the present, from its early association with Pan-Africanism and the last home of W.E.B. Du Bois to its central place in the 21st century as the first stop in African American heritage tourism. Over the course of the semester, this class will study Ghanaian social history and will explore the country’s complex balance between Western and African traditions, social norms, and political values.

Our understanding of Ghana will be enriched by a tour of the country’s outstanding sites, from the Kakum National Rain Forest with its spectacular Canopy Walk to Makola Market, one of Africa’s largest open-air trading markets. The trip will include visits to the National Museum of Culture and the W.E.B.Du Bois Centre, and Cape Coast, home to one of Africa’s oldest trading posts and one of its most infamous slave castles as well. A highlight of the trip will be a visit to the Ashanti Region of Central Ghana, home to the renowned Kingdom of Gold and still the epicenter of Ghanaian culture.
