Library Instruction

The goal of the Kelly Library Instruction Program is to foster information literacy as an integral part of the College’s commitment to scholarship.

We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with faculty to provide library instruction sessions tailored to meet specific course objectives and assignments. Kelly Library strives to offer a program of instruction designed to provide the students, faculty, and staff of Emory & Henry College with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively locate, evaluate, and use information both for academic success in a liberal arts setting and in support of lifelong learning.


Why should you have library instruction for your classes?

Library instruction will help your students find a wider array of sources than just their textbooks, reserve readings, a few encyclopedia articles and some dubious web sites.

Librarians can give students basic information on how to do library research as well as how to use more specialized indexes and online resources. We can give students guidelines on how to evaluate web pages and how to tell the difference between scholarly and popular periodicals.

So, if your students are researching a paper or project, preparing an oral presentation, speech or debate or need book reviews, we can show them how to find the information they need.

What can we do for your classes?

For ETLA Transitions I we will tailor a library guide for the subject matter of your class, and introduce your students to a few basic resources that will help them complete research papers and projects. Our goal is to show new college students the resources the library has to offer.

For English 100 classes, we show students how to use the online catalog, and an all purpose database such as Academic Search Complete. Students will complete a brief exercise finding items with these tools.

For English 101, we give a fuller tour of the library’s resources, and students will receive a booklet detailing these items. Since most English 101 sections work on a research paper, students will complete an exercise related to this project. Librarians will review and mark the exercises, and return them to the professors. This assignment may be weighted by the instructor in any manner he or she wishes.

For upper division classes, we focus on more specialized indexes and online and print resources appropriate to the subject matter of the class. We will incorporate any sources you would like to have brought to the attention of your class.

What do you need to do?

If you would like to have library instruction for your class, please contact Jane Caldwell at ext. 6209. Please give the librarians seven to ten days notice, so we may prepare instructional materials for your class. All classes meet in the McGowan Computer Lab, located on the ground floor of the library.

The librarians strongly urge you to attend library instruction and information literacy sessions with your classes. Faculty can often reinforce the points being made, and can tie the information being disseminated to their students’ research papers and projects.


Librarians will be glad to provide general tours of services, collections, and physical facilities for your students by prior arrangement.
