Around Emory 3.0
One of the main reasons some people choose to attend Emory & Henry is the distance from city life and the quiet lifestyle. For others, that’s a big drawback. Most of the time, an E&H student’s time is spent in class or studying or being involved on campus, but in our free time we like to… do what, exactly?
For the third year in a row, we have compiled a short list of some of the best things to do around campus.
There are an endless amount of adventures, places to visit, and things to do around E&H if you put yourself out there and look for them; however, it is the people on those adventures who will make everything memorable.
10. CAMELLA’S TEA SHOP - ABINGDON, VA
For something a little less, well, typical for college students, check out Camella’s Tea Shop. It’s a little more pricey than some of the other options, but it’s a fun way to feel fancy and spend an afternoon practicing your impersonations of royalty. If you like tea, you’ll love the huge spread of options, and even if you don’t you’ll have fun trying something new. The shop also has delicious finger foods like tea sandwiches and awesome scones.
9. E&H DISC GOLF - EMORY, VA
No money, no car, nothing to do? There is a disc golf course on campus to solve all those problems! Disc golf is like frisbee, but instead of tossing it to a friend, you’re aiming for a basket. There is a lot more aim involved, so it takes some practice, but if you like it, E&H has a disc golf team. Even if you never get very good (like me!) it’s still fun to walk around the quiet woods on campus and hang out with friends.
8. VOLUNTEER - APPALACHIAN CENTER, E&H
If you want to get involved and truly learn about the region you are going to school in than visit the App. Center on campus and figure out a place where you can volunteer. Through volunteering you can gain many tangible skills, work experience, something to put on your resume and are making the surrounding community better. The App. Center also organizes Intentional Break Trips where students choose to spend their fall or spring breaks traveling around the area to complete service projects for communities in need.
7. GEOCACHING - EVERYWHERE
If you’re in need of something else free to do, try geocaching. Geocaching is a when you use a set of GPS coordinates and clues to find hidden treasure. That is right I said TREASURE. There are geocaches all around the world and hidden in boxes, trees, magnets and many more. Download the app and get out there exploring southwest Virginia through geocaching.
6. ANTHONY’S DESSERTS - ABINGDON, VA
Anthony’s desserts is a restaurant in downtown Abingdon on Main Street that makes homemade desserts. Take an afternoon and enjoy some homemade desserts with your friends. You can get everything from cake to ice cream.
5. ARTS DEPOT - ABINGDON, VA
The Arts Depot in Abingdon is located in the old train depot. Here there are resident artists that have workshops and create art. You can go and watch them create their art, buy it and take classes from the resident artists. The Arts Depot is a fantastic place to spend time looking at and learning about art.
4. STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING - SWVA
There’s a good chance you have seen a photo on Instagram of someone on a Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) looking out at a beautiful lake view. You might have even been that person! But have you taken a SUP down whitewater rapids? The Outdoor Program is a great resource for learning to do all kinds of adventurous outdoor things, flat-water and whitewater SUPing included.
3. ABINGDON CINEMALL - ABINGDON, VA
The cinemall in Abingdon is the place to go and see a movie. Tuesdays are half price movie nights! On Tuesdays you will find many E&H students at the theater. The Emory Activities Board (EAB) also schedules free movie nights for students, so when you get those emails make sure to reserve your ticket!
2. EL BURRITO LOCO - GLADE SPRING, VA
El Burrito Loco is a Mexican restaurant located just a few minutes North of Emory & Henry. They have amazing food. If you can make it for lunch they have $5 lunch specials. This is a great place to go and hang out with friends and grab a bite to eat, or get it to go.
1. JUST JUMP - BRISTOL, VA/TN
The Just Jump in Bristol is a new addition to SWVA, but is already making a mark as a place to have fun. If you have a desire to spend an hour jumping then this is the place for you. Thursdays are college student nights, so take your E&H ID for a cheaper jump!
No matter what you choose to do, get out and have fun exploring the Emory & Henry campus and the surrounding areas!
