Checklist of Possible Items to Bring

This list is not all-inclusive, nor will your student need all these items. A good rule of thumb, if your student does not use it at home, they will probably not use it at school. Roommates should communicate about dividing out who will bring larger items.

Linens

  • extra-long twin sheets and pillowcases (two sets recommended) - 36”x 80” or 99cm x 203cm
  • blankets

Bath

  • bath towels and washcloths
  • bathrobe and shower shoes
  • small caddy
  • toiletries
  • hair dryer and styling tools 

Storage & Organization

Laundry

  • detergent, fabric softener, and stain remover

  • posters, photos, artwork (cannot be nailed to the wall)

Study & Technology

  • power strip with surge protector (with 5-amp circuit breaker; must be UL-approved with a heavy cord and three prong grounding)

Kitchen Items

  • small microwave, 1,000 watts or less (one per room)
  • small refrigerator, no more than 4.6 cubic feet and energy star certified

  • plates, bowls, cups, glasses
  • eating utensils
  • can opener

  • dish soap and sponges 

Identification

  • drivers license or state ID
  • copy of birth certificate

  • health insurance card
  • passport and visa

First-Aid Supplies

  • digital oral thermometer
  • bandaids
  • anti-itch cream such as hydrocortisone
  • triple antibiotic cream such as Neosporin
  • any over the counter medicines you might take as needed such as ibuprofen (Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol) or antihistamines)

Cleaning Supplies & Necessities

  • bathroom cleaner (if equipped with private or suite bath)
  • dish soap
  • dusting cloth/paper towels
  • sponges, dish scrubber
  • mop, broom, dustpan
  • small vacuum

Things to Leave at Home

These items are prohibited so that we may provide a safe and secure living environment for all of our residents. We are governed by the Commonwealth of Virginia’s fire marshal and health codes. Therefore, many of these items will result in monetary fines and/or student conduct sanctioning from the College to your student. We encourage you to help us by discussing these items BEFORE packing the car.
