Michael Chitwood (’80) Honored By Library of Virginia

Michael was honored at the 22nd Annual Library of Virginia Literary Awards

 

A press release from the Library of Virginia announced winners of the 22nd Annual Library of Virginia Literary Awards, sponsored by Dominion Energy. The October 19 awards celebration was hosted by best-selling author and award-winning filmmaker Adriana Trigiani. Awards categories were nonfiction, fiction, and poetry; People’s Choice Awards for fiction and nonfiction; and Art in Literature: The Mary Lynn Kotz Award. 

In the poetry category, Michael was honored for his most recent book of poems, Search and Rescue. It was praised by the judges for seeing “familiar subjects in fresh ways through clear diction and rich imagery that sounds just right to the ear and the mind.”

Michael’s poetry and fiction have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, Poetry, New Republic, Threepenny Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, Field, Georgia Review, and numerous other journals. His poetry collection Spill and his collection of poems about his native Appalachia, Gospel Road Going, each earned a Roanoke-Chowan Award for Poetry, while Spill and his book Poor-Mouth Jubilee were both finalists for ForeWord Magazine’s Poetry Book of the Year.

A native of Rocky Mount, Virginia, Michael earned a BA from Emory & Henry College and an MFA from the University of Virginia. He is known for exploring themes of Appalachia in his work. Additional published works include Salt Works (1992), Whet (1995), The Weave Room (1998), Gospel Road Going (2002), From Whence (2007), Spill (2007), and Poor-Mouth Jubilee (2010).
 
His collections of essays include Hitting Below the Bible Belt: Baptist Voodoo, Blood Kin, Grandma’s Teeth, and Other Stories from the South (1998) and Finishing Touches (2006). Michael is also a freelance writer and a lecturer in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

His work has received numerous awards including the Roanoke-Chowan Award (twice); Chapman Fellow, Institute of Arts and Humanities; NC Arts Council Writers Fellowship; L.E. Phillabaum Award.

Michael was recently back at his alma mater to serve as the honored poet for the inaugural Larmore Visiting Poet Series.
