Mark Arrington Honored for Innovative Teaching

Mark was honored by VAHPERD as their 2019 Teacher of the Year.

Mark Arrington, Class of 2002. Mark Arrington, Class of 2002.Mark Arrington (E&H Class of 2002) a physical education teacher in Madison County, Va., is the 2019 High School Health and Physical Education Teacher of the Year.

Innovation, creativity, experiential learning, and cross-curricular teaching practices were among the reasons cited by the Virginia Association for Health and Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (VAHPERD) in announcing Mark’s award on Nov. 9, 2019, at its 82nd annual convention in Virginia Beach.

Mark has developed educational models that meet the changes of the state’s standards of learning that put an emphasis on 21st-Century learning and skills. He participates in professional development at the state and national levels, and is often invited to present on the educational models he’s developed. 

His nomination letter cited his creativity and interest in being a collaborative teacher who works not only with other physical education teachers, but even with the school’s librarian to create unique learning experiences for students.  Describing one such program, the letter states: “Every year we co-teach a fly fishing unit utilizing the short story A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean. In this unit, students read and discuss the story while keeping a journal of their reactions and connections to the story. Then an expert from Orvis visits the school to teach the basics of fly tying. Students have the chance to tie their own flies, fish at a school pond, learn the basics of fly fishing, and end with a culminating field trip to spend an afternoon fishing and journaling.”

Mark was also elected president of VAHPERD at the convention.
