Freddy Clements Honored with Legacy Award

In the spring of 2019, Freddy Clements was named for the William A. Meehan Legacy Award. Administered by the Council of Deans at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, the award is designed to honor a faculty member who has significantly advanced the mission of Jacksonville State University through an outstanding, career-long contribution in one or more of the following areas: teaching, professional effectiveness, research, or service.
Freddy Clements is a Distinguished Professor of Drama and Faculty Costume Designer at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. He holds a BA in English/Theatre from Emory & Henry College, and an MFA in Costume design from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has designed costumes for various theaters including Wayside Theatre in Middletown, VA; CPCC in Charlotte, NC; Converse College Department of Music Spartanburg, SC; The Barter Theatre in Abingdon, VA; and Theatre In The Square in Marietta, GA.
On the University level he has taught courses in costume design, costume construction, stage make-up, advanced stage make-up, costume history, puppetry, audition and portfolio for actors, script analysis for designers, elements of design, and mold making and casting for theatre. He has coordinated annual audition and interview trips for students attending the Institute Of Outdoor Theatre Auditions and The SouthEast Theatre Conference; these trips have resulted in many professional job opportunities in theatre for JSU students.
Freddy has been constructing authentic hand-tailored Scottish kilts since 1991 and has led master classes on traditional kilt construction for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, the SouthEastern Theatre Conference; and Dragon*Con. He is currently working on the development of a Kilt Construction Manual used in workshops and Master Classes. The manual stems from continued research and study of traditional and nontraditional approaches to drafting, pleating, construction techniques, and application of closures.
He has been an active member, panelist, and workshop leader for The SouthEast Theatre Conference and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology since 1986. He has also been an active participant as a professional judge, panelist and workshop leader for the Costume Track of Dragon*Con since 2006. Freddy has performed at and provided costumes for various Renaissance Festivals in the southeast region including Louisiana Renaissance Festival, The Mobile Renaissance Faire, The Gulf Coast Renaissance Faire and The SouthEast Renaissance Faire at Horse Pens 40. He is an experienced cutter/draper and has extensive research and experience in early twentieth century corsetry and ladies underpinnings.
