Reverend Professor Darriel Harris to speak at Staley Lecture hosted by Emory & Henry College

Reverend Professor Darriel Harris with the Newborn Community of Faith Church in Baltimore, Md. will speak at the annual Staley Distinguished Christian Scholars Lecture Program at the Van Dyke Center on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Reverend Harris will be speaking about the congregation’s innovative missions of drug recovery, youth art programs, and farming that they have developed to be faithful to the mandate to Love God and neighbor. 

“Darriel Harris’s ministry has turned inner-city squalor into a garden, supplied organically grown vegetables to local restaurants, provided jobs to those who were destitute, and brought pride to his community,” says Jim Dawsey, professor of religion. “Such work moves theology from the theoretical to the practical. Every effort to better society is an effort that God blesses, God wants, and that God demands of us.”

The Staley Distinguished Christian Scholars Lecture Program was established by Thomas F. Staley, whose father was an Emory & Henry alumnus. The Staley Lecture enables Emory & Henry College to provide the community an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the Christian faith and its relevance for our human encounter with life.
