Emory & Henry senior Kara Stewart to make a career out of giving back

Our Emory & Henry seniors are preparing to graduate and change the world.

Kara Stewart will graduate in May 2020 with a degree in Civic Innovation and Sociology. She is passionate about working with incarcerated or formerly incarcerated individuals, as well as at-risk youth.

“I think it’s important to remember that God gives us all second chances daily, and I believe we should do the same for other people,” says Stewart.

Stewart shared her appreciation for the opportunities that Emory & Henry strives to provide to students.

“Emory & Henry prepared me for the real world by encouraging me to do an internship with a local nonprofit,” says Stewart. “The connected liberal arts education makes room for opportunities on campus as well as off campus. Allowing me to get off campus into the working world while also being able to earn credit towards my degree gave me the chance to put my education to work before graduating.”

On campus, Stewart was a Bonner Scholar and served in leadership roles for the Campus Christian Fellowship and Orientation.

“Spiritual Life was one of the most meaningful parts of my time at Emory & Henry, and Sharon Wright and Mary K Briggs were definitely a part of that,” says Stewart. “They have loved me and cared for me like I was one of their own. They were always there for me when I needed a good laugh, a shoulder to cry on, and lots and lots of prayer.”

Stewart also expressed her gratitude for the faculty and staff members that have served as her advisors, such as Dr. St. Clair, Travis Proffitt, Jolie Lewis, Tal Stanley, and Dr. Little. Stewart has felt grateful that they truly care about their students and have been there for her during her four years at Emory & Henry.

After graduation, Stewart will be working with the nonprofit HOPE Inc. in Wytheville, Va that focuses on housing needs.
