Finding the Positive

Posted by Monica Hoel
Emily Cockerham Lee (E&H ’09) is a financial planner whose spirits are high, even when the markets are low.

Emily Lee is aware of how the COVID-19 pandemic has complicated our lives, but she chooses to focus on the positive. “During these challenging times we see and hear so much negativity, but it’s important to look for and celebrate the many good things that are occurring around us, too. The innovation, creative community support, and success stories need to be celebrated and showcased. I am reminded of Maya Angelou’s quote: ‘We need Joy as we need air, we need Love as we need water, we need Each Other as we need the earth we share.’”

Emily is a wealth management advisor with Carson Wealth, and she is finding that her work as a financial planner is incredibly busy right now, but it has taken a more personal turn that she didn’t expect – but she is embracing it. “Adversity creates opportunity, and for me it has taken client meetings to an even more personal setting in each other’s lives by digital meetings introducing the home setting. Dogs have barked back and forth to each other between Zoom meetings, I have been introduced to children and grandchildren through the video chats, and we all experience this new normal together through the comfort of our homes.”

Emily and her husband have both moved offices home, and they have a toddler and furry friends to juggle along with work schedules. “Camp Grandma has been a lifesaver in the mornings and we tag team in the afternoon.” So she understands the challenges of this new norm, but she is finding many bright sides.

Her work load is fuller than ever, and she is grateful for her role as someone who can offer reassurance during an unsettling time. “The volatility in the market has certainly made things busier than ever. There are many tax planning opportunities that can be taken advantage of during these downturns in the market along with significant buying opportunities while stock positions are on sale. We have met many new people through this, helping put together their financial plans to use in guiding their investment decisions. It has helped people prioritize estate documents, ensuring they are updated from both a health perspective and financial perspective with the new SECURE act that was passed at the end of December.

“I always say it’s easy to be a Wealth Advisor when the markets are up, but the true value comes when we see these downturns and help to alleviate the emotions we all experience as we see the volatility within our finances.”

She offers great basic advice: “During these times of volatility it’s easy to let your emotions lead your decision making when it comes to investing and finances.  Don’t sell out of your portfolio and try timing your way back in. History shows the negative impact this can have on the longevity of your assets. Review your financial plan, stick with the fundamentals of investing, and if you do not understand the structure of your finances, there is never a better time to put together a comprehensive plan.”

Even though she has been forced into doing “business not as usual,” she expects she and colleagues will continue to do things differently in the future. “The forced innovation from working remotely will certainly change how we do business going forward. The embrace of technology with clients we work with across the country has increased to a new level and has opened up opportunities we had not envisioned before.”
