Emory & Henry College takes Senior Art Exhibit online
As soon as it was announced that the students would not be returning to campus after spring break due to COVID-19 concerns, Joseph Champagne, curator for the McGlothlin Center for the Arts, began looking into the possibilities for taking the exhibit online.
“While I know, and share, the students’ disappointment in the cancellation of the gallery exhibit, I know that the seniors are glad to at least present the works that they had put so much time and effort into creating, and to share this work with the campus community and beyond,” says Champagne.
With the support of the Art Department faculty and McGlothlin Center for the Arts Director Dirk Moore, Champagne reached out to seniors for digital files representing their work for the exhibition, as well as biographies, which were sent to Rachael Wilbur, Emory & Henry web content manager, for the construction of the virtual exhibition.
“Of course I was looking forward to exhibiting in the main gallery in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts, but I think exhibiting online is the experience that we needed entering the workforce during COVID-19,” says Emory & Henry senior Hannah Muller. “It is uncertain how long this will go on and many things, such as exhibitions, are moving online. Already having an online show under our belts will give us a slight edge.”
Emory & Henry senior Chelsea Snead adds, “The Emory & Henry Art Department has given me many opportunities to expand and improve my art. The professors push us to be the best that we can be and provide unbelievable connections all of which I consider extremely helpful in my job search after graduation.”
