E&H Alumni Librarians Organize Reading Challenge for Stay Homecoming

This Stay Homecoming event is a real page-turner.

A group of Emory & Henry alumni who are librarians by trade have organized two great literary events as part of our virtual homecoming event, Stay Homecoming.

They are doing an interview with alumni authors on October 15. And they are doing a month-long read-a-thon with teams of alumni.

On October 15, they will conduct personal live interviews with the authors of the following books:

From Heaven to Earth, by Rev. Paul Seay, E&H ’01 and Rev. Wil Cantrell, E&H ’01

The Environmental Almanac of Virginia, by Richard Groover, E&H ’71

My Heart Warrior, by Michael De Los Santos, E&H re’06

The Altar Call Not the Messiah by J Butler Cox, E&H ’85

There’s a Smudge of Fudge on the Judge, Lincoln McCarthy, by Elizabeth Fletcher, E&H ’86

Last Stand on Bataan: The Defense of the Philippines, December 1941-May 1942
by Christopher L. Kolakowski, E&H ’99

The Ballad of Sy Black: The Devil and Deacon White by Mark Early, E&H ’86

Each author will be interviewed by one of the librarians, and will have a few minutes for a discussion. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions of all authors at the conclusion of the interviews. Please register in order to receive a Zoom link.

In the meantime, the entire month of October will be a running “Read-A-Thon” competition with librarians serving as captains of teams filled with alumni who are committed to reading books during October. Teams will compete using a points system that earns points for books completed and even social media posts about the library served by the teams’ captains. You can choose a team to join at this link.

The entire event is being shepherded by Christopher Baker (E&H ’06) and Kris Sheets (E&H ’02). Baker has recently taken on a new job as The Adult Services Librarian at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library in New Bern, North Carolina. Kris Sheets is serving as the Branch Manager and Librarian of the Saltville Public Library in Saltville, Virginia. Chris says the project began as something of a friendly wager. “This all started with Kris Sheets and me challenging our libraries to a read-off. It’s morphed into Emory & Henry alumni librarians and a Facebook group. Now we’ve got a read-a-thon, a book list of E&H authors we’re collecting. And the author talks will be fun. Anything to promote our public libraries and Emory & Henry is going to be fun.”

Volunteer leadership during our 2020 Stay Homecoming event is an added perk for an unusual year, and the E&H Alumni Association is excited to see the interest and involvement. The reading challenge starts October 1.
