Emory & Henry celebrates Appalachia’s Place in the World with 7th Annual Global Street Party
“Moving the Global Street Party online this year will give us a chance to make the event truly global,” says Dr. Celeste Gaia, Director of International Education. “The purpose of this event is to promote cultural exchange through recognizing our interconnectedness with others all over the globe. We celebrate diversity, multiculturalism, and believe that global education is essential to peaceful human relations and fundamental human rights.”
The event is a celebration of global diversity with a special focus on exploring cultural and racial diversity in Appalachia, involving current faculty, staff, and students; alumni participants from around the world; former faculty and staff members; local minority business owners; and community members to share in the celebration. The event also features a headlining musical performance from Grammy-nominee and Johnson City native Amythyst Kiah and an additional performance from Annabelle’s Curse.
“We want students to know from the time they step on campus that Emory & Henry works to be a place of acceptance, tolerance, equity, freedom and inclusion,” says Dr. Gaia. “And, that grace of acceptance should also apply to everyone we encounter around the world, on our campus, and in our community. This year’s event will be a celebration and recognition of who our neighbors really are, and how fortunate we are to live in a multicultural world.”
