October is LGBTQAI+ History Month
For many generations, LGBTQ+ persons have made incredible contributions to our society, but not always as an “out” individual. This month is a time to honor and celebrate the work and identity of ALL. Through the fearless activism and perseverance of LGBTQ+ persons and allies, we have progressed as a society so that the world is a safer place for LGBTQ+ persons. While we still have a long way to go, more LGBTQ+ individuals are leading, serving, influencing and changing the world for the better. This is possible because so many prominent LGBTQ+ figures are committed to being trailblazers on a path for full inclusion.
This month, at Emory & Henry, we will celebrate our LGBTQ+ family by honoring and discussing national, regional and local and LGBTQ+ persons who’ve influenced our society: from Bayard Rustin, a prominent figure of the Civil Rights Movement to Toni Atkins, a 1984 E&H graduate who now serves as President pro tempore of the California State Senate, making her the first woman and openly LGBTQ+ person to serve in this role. We will explore prominent LGBTQ+ artists, from Jericho Brown to Janelle Monáe, and discuss how their poetry and music are shaping identities and narratives for a new generation of LGBTQ+ communities. We will explore recent student research on what it means to be Applachian and LGBTQ+ in a world that is rapidly changing.
