DEI Celebrates First Gen Students: Abby Hockett
Abby Hockett is an Interdisciplinary History & Social Sciences major. She is affiliated with the Education & History Departments. Abby grew up only 15 minutes from Emory & Henry College.
When asked to tell her story, this was her response:
“Being the first person in my family to go to college has been quite a challenge and has not ever been an easy experience. Until you actually begin the experience, you have no idea what to expect, but can only wonder. Even through the hardships, it has been the most rewarding experience that has grown me in so many ways over the course of my time at Emory & Henry. Emory & Henry’s History and Education Departments have given me the opportunities to succeed as a First Generation Student by always having open doors and adequate resources for success. Without college advocates at my local high school, I never would have stepped foot on a college campus. At Emory & Henry, Dr. Thomas Little has been my History advisor since the beginning and has made being a First Generation student less stressful and has grown my love for history I never knew I had that I will eventually apply to a PK-8 classroom. I chose Emory & Henry College for my college education because they have an incredible, high-ranked education program that has a positive reputation for well-trained teachers in the community and close to my hometown. The small student body is similar to my high school, as I never wanted to attend a big university. By going to a small school, there are more opportunities for hands-on learning and more student-centered learning. To my fellow First Generation Students, I am so incredibly proud of you, dream big, and we WILL change the statistics.”
