DEI Celebrates First Gen Students: Madison Owens

The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion celebrates First Generation Celebration Week from November 8th - November 13th, 2020! We will be highlighting & lifting up the voices of First Gen students, faculty & staff this week. We are so proud of the incredible hard work and courage it takes to be a first generation college student. We honor these students and are here to support them during their time at Emory & Henry and beyond!

Madison Owens is an Exercise Science major and part of the Pre-Health Club. Madison is pursuing her doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy at Emory & Henry School of Health Sciences after graduation.

We asked her to share her story with us:

“Being the first person in my family to attend college has been a very challenging experience. At first, I didn’t have anyone I could turn to when I was uncertain and no one was there to guide me in the right direction. However, this experience has taught me what it means to appreciate every opportunity that I have been given. Additionally, it has taught me that, despite what background I come from, hard work and dedication can put me where I’ve only dreamt of being. My biggest cheerleaders have been my friends and family. They have continued to encourage me throughout my journey here and Emory & Henry. The most surprising thing about my college experience has been how everyone stays in a state of panic and calmness at the same time all four years they are in school and it never gets easier. I picked Emory & Henry College because of the one on one education you receive from faculty. I transferred from a huge university and realized that’s truly what I needed to succeed in my remaining years in undergraduate study and I was absolutely right.”
