The Office of DEI Honors the Beginning of Hanukkah

Posted by Carleigh Blaylock
Greetings to all our Jewish sisters and brothers. Tonight begins the Jewish Festival of Lights or Hanukkah!

December 10, 2020 begins the Jewish Festival of Lights or Hanukkah. This holiday commemorates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem. This is especially important as it is a reminder of the warrior spirit that is within all of us. We have the opportunity to reclaim the things that were taken from us. The story is told that after the temple was recaptured after lighting the lamp of victory, miraculously the light burned for eight days.

Hanukkah begins at sundown December 10, 2020 and will end on December 20, 2020. We invite you to embody the light of the world and let your little light shine in solidarity with our Jewish sisters and brothers in otherwise could be a dark world.

Happy Hanukkah!

John, Sharon, & Carleigh

The Office of Diversity Equity & Inclusion

“The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, called a menorah (or hanukkiah). One branch is typically placed above or below the others and its candle is used to light the other eight candles. This unique candle is called the shamash (Hebrew: שַׁמָּשׁ‎, “attendant”). Each night, one additional candle is lit by the srhamash until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival.”
