E&H Mass Communications students gaining industry experience

The Emory & Henry Mass Communications Department has been working with the UVA Cancer Center community advisory board to develop a media campaign to raise awareness for colorectal cancer.

Students from three E&H classes are developing media materials: audio PSAs, a press kit, and a PR package for several Southwest Virginia Federally Qualified Health Centers to use.

Our Southwest Virginia (SWVA) Community Advisory Board (CAB) to the UVA Cancer Center was thrilled to partner with the talented and creative E&H students this semester,” says Jaime Zoellner, Associate Director of UVA Cancer Center without Walls. “The students helped to develop an awareness campaign to increase colorectal cancer screening. The quality of their products, including public service announcements and a media kit geared towards safety net clinics in rural SWVA, were top notch. Given the documented disparities in cancer control across SWVA, we look forward to future service learning projects with E&H faculty and students.”

UVA’s Cancer Center Without Walls addresses the burden of cancer across Virginia and beyond by working with communities to identify and address their needs through dissemination of evidence-based cancer control and prevention strategies.

“Project-based projects require extensive preparation by the student that includes client and process management and post-assignment follow-up work,” says Brent Treash, professor in the Mass Communications department. “Projects like this audio PSA for the UVA Cancer Center provide opportunities for students to integrate their classroom education with client and community engagement about a potential life saving health issue.”

Eight PSA’s were selected as options by the cancer center to run just in time for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March. The students’ work that was selected includes: Tara Sanders, Alexa Shockley, Jacob Cordle, Asha Thomas, Mikayla McCray, Austin Faris, Ben McCloskey, and Laura Hay.

“Knowing my class project is actually for a client is an exciting opportunity because it’s like a glimpse into what the world of work or even an internship would look like,” says Alexa Shockley, E&H Mass Communications student. “I can practice my skills in making audio projects doing any assignment for class, but communicating with a client and making revisions based on their brand and their wishes is an awesome professional experience.”
