The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Wishes Everyone a Blessed Easter Weekend
Today, April 2, through Sunday, April 4, 2021, Emory & Henry College - which is one of 122 institutions affiliated with The United Methodist Church - will take time away from our very robust academic schedule to commemorate Easter. The Easter Break at Emory & Henry is a college sanctioned holiday that gives students, faculty and staff time to spend with family and friends during a sacred time on the Christian calendar.
Easter, also called Pascha or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian festival and holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day after his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. Easter is a “movable feast” and does not have a fixed date. However, it is always held on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25.
Many Christians refer to the week preceding Easter Sunday as “Holy Week” which includes Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Last Supper, and Good Friday commemorating the crucifixion and earthly death of Jesus the Christ. The western Easter Season begins on Easter Sunday and lasts seven weeks, ending with the coming of the 50th day, Pentecost Sunday. In eastern Christianity, the season of Pascha begins on Pascha and ends with the coming of the 40th day, the Feast of Ascension. Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover. The origin of Easter according to the Synoptic Gospels, including both the crucifixion and the resurrection took place during the Jewish Passover and is full of symbolism.
At Emory & Henry we stand in solidarity with our sisters, brothers and siblings throughout the world as they seek to live out their faith through personal choices. We welcome this much needed break to pause and reflect on our individual spiritual paths. We wish each of you joy, peace, and happiness during this Easter Season.
