Candace Green’s Work is Helping Others Work

Posted by Monica Hoel
Candace Green started Emory & Henry as a business major, but she took a class that changed her direction.

Candace has held a lot of interesting jobs in her young lifetime – from selling beer to providing security services to human resources to doing a stint in the military. But she eventually realized that if she wanted to get a solid secure job she would need a college degree. So the energetic woman finished an associate’s degree at Virginia Highlands Community College then graduated magna cum laude with her bachelor’s degree from Emory & Henry – all while working at the Martha Washington Inn.

She was planning to major in business, but after one sociology class with Dr. Amy Sorenson she found her passion was going to be helping people. “Dr. Sorenson and I were pretty much the same person.” So Candace decided to double-major in business and sociology and set her sights on serving humanity.

She is now a personal career counselor for Briggs and Associates. What that means is that she provides assistance to individuals who have a developmental disability diagnosis or a mental health diagnosis and need very personal attention in order to be successful in a working environment.

Briggs and Associates works with agencies all over Georgia to employ persons who might not otherwise be successful in the workplace, but that means people who do what Candace does provide some very time-intensive attention to the 13 or so clients she works with in order to make them successful in the work world.

Candace’s high energy personality makes her the perfect fit for a job that has her driving all around the Atlanta area checking on clients, but there is something a bit more personal that motivates her in this work. She has a son who has special needs and she knows that one day he will likely need some special attention as he enters the world of work and personal responsibility. Candace says she is glad to have this opportunity to learn the opportunities and pitfalls that will help her guide her son as he becomes an adult and seeks a job. “He is absolutely my motivation for doing this work now, and I hope it will help me advise him as he grows up.”
