Emory & Henry staffs Student Success Center to support students

Emory & Henry College recently welcomed its largest incoming class in its 185-year history, with a total of 447 students depositing for the fall semester in addition to more than 650 returning students. With hundreds of students coming from Virginia and the region, more than 47% of students are joining the campus from out of state and nine different countries, the College has worked throughout the summer to staff a more robust Student Success Center.

“For nearly 200 years Emory & Henry has been a place that gives folks a place to change the trajectory of their lives,” says Dean of Student Success, Travis Proffitt. “Now, more than ever, we are committed to providing a living and learning environment that supports the whole student in their journey by providing a wide range of holistic services to ensure their success. It is our deepest honor to journey alongside students during this time in their life, and the Student Success staff are among the most passionate and talented professionals I’ve ever had the privilege to know. E&H students are in very good hands.”

Lauren Harding and Carleigh Blaylock joined the Student Success Center as Student Success Coaches. In this role, they will help students connect with resources and create strategic plans to accomplish their personal and academic goals.

“I enjoy supporting students as they pursue their education and making sure every student and Emory & Henry College is seen, supported and celebrated,” says Blaylock. Blaylock previously served as the Special Projects Coordinator for the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at E&H.

Sydni Leonard, E&H Class of 2020, and Antwan VanBuren, E&H Assistant Women’s Parttime Basketball Coach, will be serving new students as First Year Academic Advisors. In this position, they will be helping students choose or change majors, select and register for appropriate courses, get connected with academic support services, such as tutoring and success coaching, explore study abroad opportunities and participate in career exploration through activities such as internships and undergraduate research experiences.

The Powell Resource Center (PRC) is another on-campus resource for students. The PRC provides free, professional counseling services to help students manage the routine changes that will take place in their lives, as well as more difficult changes or challenges. Tutoring and peer mentoring is also available to students to ensure academic success.
