Summer Apostol: Lifting Up Artists

Posted by Monica Hoel
Summer Apostol thinks art ought to be everywhere.

“You don’t have to go to the fine museums in New York to see good art: there is great art right here in Appalachia!”

Summer graduated from E&H in 2019, and she describes a class that changed the direction of her life. “It was a class in curating art with Dan VanTassle, and I suddenly realized that THIS is what I wanted to do! I wanted to be in the world of artists and lift up their work for others to see.”

As a blooming art curator, Summer has already accumulated some great experience. She worked with the shows in the art gallery on campus that is housed in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. After graduation, she got a job at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol (a Smithsonian affiliate). But she quickly realized that it would be easy to get too comfortable in that role at the museum, and nowadays she is setting up art exhibits on a smaller scale that will bring art to the community in a variety of ways.

Her “day job” is serving as the manager for Salt of the Earth – a salt spa in downtown Abingdon. The business’s owner is so impressed with Summer that she offered the walls of her establishment to serve as exhibit space for the shows that Summer wants to curate. Shows rotate monthly, and new art hits the walls in time for Abingdon’s First Friday events (held on the first Friday of every month and aimed at highlighting local businesses, regional artists, and community music-makers).

But she hit an interesting dilemma: some of the artists she was working with didn’t feel like she had what some might call “street cred.” “They felt like I didn’t understand them because I wasn’t an artist myself.”

However – Summer is an artist. And recently she decided that if she was going to encourage others to make the bold decision to display their art to the public she needed to be willing to do the same. “There was a month when I didn’t have another artist lined up, so I curated my own art.” Through the process she found surprises about herself and her art, and she says the whole experience will make her a better curator.

You can enjoy a delightful conversation with Summer in the WEHC-FM archives, during which you’ll also learn what her dreams are for building a community of artists. Listen in!
