Nora Davis Helps Bring Jonesborough to Life!

Nora Davis is the marketing and promotions coordinator for Jonesborough, Tennessee. And she says there is a lot of new activity in a town that is Tennessee’s oldest.

She started working for Jonesborough (founded in 1779) in April of 2021, after doing events and communications for the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce.

Tourism during a pandemic has been a challenge, including how to handle the town’s signature event: the annual storytelling festival. The Los Angeles Times is quoted as saying, “What New Orleans is to Jazz, Jonesborough is to storytelling.” The event saw its 50th anniversary in 2021 and averages 10,000 attendees, but the festival has had to be held online for the past two seasons.

However a visit to Jonesborough will attest to the fact that business is getting back to normal. They’ve been holding weekly live music events with big crowds, they have a bustling shopping district, and their Jonesborough Days event on the 4th of July weekend attracted 14,000 people. Nora says those July numbers benefited from the fact that other communities in the area changed their regular plans. “Johnson City cancelled their 4th of July events so everyone came to Jonesborough!” And she brags on area merchants who are enthusiastic about promoting the community and agreed to keep the doors open in the evenings during Jonesborough Days.

Nora says Fall is also a beautiful time to visit downtown Jonesborough. Nora says Fall is also a beautiful time to visit downtown Jonesborough.Nora says Jonesborough offers everything from antiques to lollipops to clothing to craft bourbon (Tennessee Hills Distillery is owned by E&H alumni). The Chuckey Depot has a train museum and the opportunity to dine in a real train car. The Storytelling Center offers programming year-round. And there’s a farmer’s market on weekends, as well as a storefront that sells farmer’s market fare throughout the week.

In the fall, Nora and her team offered clever Halloween events, and the Christmas season offers parades, shopping, gingerbread, Whoville and even a performance of Holiday Inn by the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre.

Nora credits her success in the industry to her time as a mass communications major at Emory & Henry. “I learned how to write and I know what media outlets are looking for.” She also has had some training in graphic design and that gives her an edge that other professionals could only hope for. And she did two internships while a student: one at Barter Theatre and one at the Edgar Allen Poe Museum in Richmond.
