Basketball Showcase Honoring Coach Bob Johnson Launches Dec. 18

Posted by Monica Hoel
Andrew Hart is organizing a basketball showcase aimed at honoring his former coach, Bob Johnson. But the rest of the story is that every team in the event has a connection to Coach Johnson.

The Bob Johnson Classic will be held on Saturday, December 18, beginning at Noon, at Lord Botetourt High School in Roanoke. It’s a day chock full of basketball, and each team is coached by someone with a direct connection to Coach Bob Johnson. Andrew is quick to remind everyone that this is just a sample of the wide array of coaches who are connected by Coach Johnson. “These are just Virginia high school coaches, it is just the tip of the iceberg. Our event obviously doesn’t include guys like Mike Young (’86) at VT, or Jimmy Allen (’93) at Army-West Point or others including Jarell Christian (’09) who is the head coach of the Boston Celtics G-League team.”

Andrew says the event is aimed at honoring Coach Johnson. But he admits that the day will be part basketball competition and part reunion. “I think I’ll be watching the other guys coaching as much as I’ll be watching the actual teams play. It is so unique to know that we all came from the same coaching family. This is going to feel a lot like Homecoming.”

There will be ten teams in all playing in the day-long showcase, each represented by an E&H alum:

R.J. Spelsberg (’98, Monacan High School), Preston Gordon (’04, Goochland High School), Heath Bralley (’01, Fluvanna High School), Mike Cartolaro (’83, Parry McClure High School), Andrew Hart (’09, Lord Botetourt), Paul Redgate (’05, Liberty Christian High School), Casey Johnson (’00, Alta Vista High School), Patrick Bailey (’01, Narrows High School), Steve Posey (’87, John Battle High School), Hank Luton (’07, Asst. Coach, Salem High School).

You can also expect to see other E&H faces in the crowd like alum and former head coach, Paul Russo (’03), former Pulaski County High School coach and athletic director Mark Hanks (’84), and there’s an outside chance that fans might bump into Virginia Tech’s head coach Mike Young (’86).

Fans are welcome – either to cheer the teams or catch up with old friends! There will be a $10 per person charge at the door and that will allow you to come and go throughout the day. If you’d like more information, contact Andrew at: ahart@bcps.k12.va.us
