Erica Drake-McGregor Has Great Advice from Her Profession

Erica Drake-McGregor has learned a lot in her 15 years as a nurse. But in a new role as a urology nurse, she has found out that it’s never too late to learn new skills.

She laughs when she explains that she didn’t really choose the field of urology – rather, it chose her. “I had worked in pediatrics, I had served in nursing homes, I had done home health – so when someone asked if I wanted to work in a doctor’s office I thought it would be an exciting new challenge. I didn’t understand until I got there that it was a urology clinic!”

She says there was no special training in advance she had to do; she simply learned on the job. “They told me exactly what to do and told me to do it well! I had to learn fast.”

And she has! She’s only been in urology for a couple of years, but she loves it, and she is quickly understanding the importance of the field. “Being in this office has made me more aware of how important it is to make ‘good toileting’ a priority. And I know now not to take little problems for granted.” She explains that many people suffer through problems because they think (or they are told) that the problems they are having are normal side effects of age – or that they just come with the territory of being a woman.

“My family members all call me for a consultation, but I’m quick to tell them to take their issues seriously and go see a doctor. There’s no sense in being miserable; there is help!”

Erica has been a nurse in her hometown of Chattanooga for most of her career, but she recently decided to venture out a bit. She’s in Memphis now and jokes that it is a different speed of life. “Chattanooga is a lot like Emory: it’s comfort food! But Memphis is all hot and spicy and barbecue!” But despite the adjustments, she seems to be enjoying the new venue.

She offers practical advice to all of us: “Get a check up!” She says too many people find problems later than they should simply because they don’t take the time to check in with their health providers.

And her best advice: “Be vocal. If we want to have our health issues taken seriously, we have to be vocal and insist on being taken seriously.”

Lack of education, she says, is a big part of the problem and she offers a website where we can learn more: she says MyPevicFloor.com is a great site for women in particular, and suggests that men spend some time learning more about Peyronie’s disease.
