Lisa Dingus Bratton: Teacher of the Year...Again!

Posted by Monica Hoel
Lisa Dingus Bratton has taught math at Ross N. Robinson Middle School in Kingsport for 34 years….except for that one year she was an assistant principal.

After spending a year in administration she knew with great certainty that her place was in the classroom. Not because she was unsuccessful in the role: but she really missed teaching. “I missed the students and I missed the math. When I returned to the classroom a friend said to me, ‘I could have told you you wouldn’t be happy in administration because you were out of your gift.’”

Lisa’s gift as a teacher has been recognized by her peers numerous times as they just named her the Ross N. Robinson Teacher of the Year…for the fourth time.

Her skills have also shone through as the advisor for a math team competition called “MATHCOUNTS.” She’s been the coach for their student team since 1993, and since 1993 the team from Ross N. Robinson has always won the regional competition.

Ryan Ferrell (E&H '15), Olivia Bratton Ferrell (E&H '15), Adam Bratton, Lisa Di...Ryan Ferrell (E&H '15), Olivia Bratton Ferrell (E&H '15), Adam Bratton, Lisa Dingus Bratton (E&H '88), David Bratton (E&H '89). Lisa is honest about the fact that the past two years have been really hard for students and teachers alike, but she will still encourage young people to consider going into education as a career. “I consider it the most important mission field in the world, and we need talented young people to be teachers.”

And this is something she knows from experience. She tearfully remembers what her teachers at Emory & Henry did for her. “I was going to be a lawyer, but Dr. Raines asked me to think about teaching. And after I chose education as my major, Dr. Lang didn’t put me in a box. He knew I was a reader and he encouraged me to study literature and to write. No one tried to ‘pigeon hole’ me…and I remember that lesson when I deal with my students today.”

You can enjoy a conversation with Lisa on The Duck Pond Wall podcast wherever you listen to podcasts.
