Appalachian Center Honors Late Activist, Mr. William Fields

Posted by Leah Wilson
In honor of the life work of the late Mr. William Fields, the Appalachian Center for Civic Life has made a generous donation to the Mount Pleasant Preservation Society.

Throughout his life, Mr. Fields was an advocate in the fight against racism in the region. He worked closely with the Mount Pleasant Preservation Society as they digitized the oral history of African Americans in local Marion, VA. E&H Senior, Miranda Quarles says, “Mr. Fields was an amazing and brilliant man, who told of his life through his art work and oral stories.” Miranda has worked on this civic engagement project since her first year at E&H. Miranda has been working alongside Marion promante figures, Evlyn Thompson and Diana Hayes to help remember the impact that Mr. Fields has made in the community. Mr. Fields has a very personal connection to Emory & Henry College and its African American history being that his great grandmother was a slave to the college’s first president, Mr. Fulton.

Although Mr. Fields is gone, his work carries on. Two rooms are to be renovated in the Mount Pleasant Preservation Society museum. Mr. Fields was very active here on campus, involved with students and civic innovation projects. According to Miranda Quarles, “He was a very understanding and passionate man and working with him was very eye opening to see his personal connection with racism”. You can find some of his artwork that tells his family’s story around the school including several pieces in the Appalachian Center for Civic Life. His legacy will continue to make an impact on our Emory & Henry Campus for years to come.
