Ashlee Griggs Rector Loves Being a Nurse

Ashlee Griggs never imagined herself in the field of nursing, but now she’s a registered and nurse and says, “I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

She studied athletic training at Emory & Henry and planned to go to physical therapy school. But after finishing her undergraduate work she took a little break to catch her breath and took a job as a patient advocate. It convinced her that she wanted to be more “hands on” with her role in health care.

She went to Virginia Highlands Community College for training and wasn’t sure what area of nursing she would enter. She started out in orthopedics, and really loved seeing someone come in with obvious mobility issues and then complete treatment looking so much more comfortable and happier. But after watching her dad work through skin cancer, she found she really had an interest in dermatology, and that’s where she’s working today.

There are also many branches of nursing. “There are nurse educators, patient educators, surgery assistants, scribes – so many options. But once I got involved with being a patient educator, I knew I had found my spot.”

In her role, she gets to meet with a patient after the doctor has completed treatment, and it is up to Ashley to explain what happens next. “I like being an educator because it helps people know how to stay healthy going forward. And I love it when people come back healthier and feeling better.”

What is Ashley’s best advice? She laughs as she says, “Get out of those tanning beds and put on some sunscreen!” Then she added, “Always trust your gut: if you think you need a second opinion, get one. And always do your annual exam.”

Ashley says nurse’s training wasn’t easy, but she constantly experiences gratification for what she has learned. “It is the hardest most rewarding experience. With nursing you’re not just trying to pass a test…you really have to know it. But being able to recall the training and put that knowledge into use makes it all worthwhile.”
