Emory & Henry and Washington County Schools to Present Free Theatre Camp in June

Emory & Henry College and Washington County Virginia Public Schools are joining to offer a free theatre camp in June for kids in the third to twelfth grades.

Area theatre professionals will work with these students to offer classes that focus on music theatre, improvisation, acting, Shakespeare and theatre design. The camp, which will be held in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts at Emory & Henry, runs from June 13 to June 18 with an afternoon performance on the final day.

“Theatre is the ultimate collaborative art form,” according to Dr. Kelly Bremner, chair of the E&H Theatre Department. “In the theatre we all get to come together and work with our hands, heads, and hearts to touch the audience we serve. It is my hope that the children of Washington County will come play with us for the week and learn a bit about this amazing art form on our gorgeous campus!”

The camp is a partnership between Washington County Public Schools, the Emory & Henry Appalachian Center for Civic Life, and the Emory & Henry Department of Theatre. Kathleen Buttolph, a 1998 graduate of Emory & Henry’s Theatre Department who works in the county public school system, conceived the program and led the effort to seek funding.

“Emory & Henry’s Theatre program is incredible,” Bremner said. “We have always wanted to find a way to sponsor a camp so we could share what we have with the surrounding community. I am so grateful to have a partner in the public schools to get to share the magic of theatre free of charge to the kids of Washington County.”
