First C.H.A.T.S. Event- A Huge Success!

Posted by Leah Wilson
Want to be more involved on campus? Want to feel more connected to your community?

Try participating in C.H.A.T.S. The acronym stands for Connecting Humans and Telling Stories. Keeping true to the ideals of the Civic Innovation program, the Appalachian Center for Civic Life has partnered with Mount Rodger Community Services and the Appalachian Community Connectors of Marion, VA in hopes of connecting people from all backgrounds.

According to Megan Hamilton, the Coordinator of Civic Engagement Projects, the main goal of the program is to “ultimately connect people. Connecting with those who don’t know each other and who don’t run in the same groups. Build curiosity with people who don’t need to be best friends, but find a way to be connected and build a stronger community”.

The first session in the series, “A Beginner’s Mind,” was held on February 28th at the Lincoln Theatre. Between E&H students and community members, there were almost 50 people present. Participants reported that they gained connection with others and skills they could apply to their day to day lives.

There are two more events in the series that will continue the goal of connecting people. The next event will take place on Monday, March 28th and is titled “Challenging Assumptions.” Here, participants will dive into thoughtful discussions that will help them consistently practice challenging their assumptions and have them taking a helpful second look at the people around them.

The third and final event is held on Monday, April 18th and is titled, “Third Chair Perspective.” Participants will practice stepping away from their own perspective to see another person’s point of view from a third chair, or neutral lens.

Both of the next events are held at the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, VA from 7pm-8:30pm. Everyone is welcome to join and students have the opportunity to earn Lyceum Credit. Reminders for the event will be sent to your school email to stay up to date.

If you have any questions, please contact Megan Hamilton at mhamilton@ehc.edu.
