Megan Bost is with the U.S. Department of Justice

Megan Bost is working for the U.S. Department of Justice, and she got there on a horse. Sort of.

Megan is a 2016 Emory & Henry graduate and has just finished law school at Elon University, and credits this very impressive first-job-out-of-college to two things: a great internship and horses.

Megan interned at a prison Butner, North Carolina. She was originally chosen for a different very elite internship, and she was excited for that opportunity. But when Covid hit, she was reassigned to this prison about 40 miles from Elon. And what could have been a setback turned out to be the perfect place to learn the ropes. “That’s experience that no one really gets…to work at an institution like that for your first internship.”

After she graduated, she applied for this job with the Department of Justice, specifically working with the prison system, and found out they were only hiring one person from a huge field of applicants. Her hopes were dashed, thinking there was just no way she’d get that lucky. But she says the work she did interning in Butner made all the difference.

Well, that…and the horses.

Megan was also a decorated rider in the E&H Intermont equestrian program, and it just so happened that her interviewers were familiar with the world of equestrian competition. “One of the interviewers was a rider, and the other had a daughter who rides. So half of the interview was talking about horses!”

It is clear, however, that Megan is more than just a good networker; she’s an energetic professional who is doing pro bono work serving clients who have housing challenges, she’s helping to evaluate the prison system to make it more just and effective, she’s teaching riding classes, she’s earning her license to judge horse shows, and she’s serving as a volunteer student recruiter for Emory & Henry. Somehow, she has even found time to do crafts and cooking for her neighbors.

Horses may have gotten the hiring conversation started, but it’s clear that her energy and professionalism led to the job. And maybe just a tinge of humility helped to seal the deal. Even though Megan was very successful in the ring while riding in her student days, she is quick to give credit to the E&H Intermont Equestrian coaches that she says are well-known in every arena. She says Heather Richardson and Lisa Moosemeuller-Terry are great at seeing raw talent and “buffing it out,” and adds that they reward hard work and give opportunities to riders who may not have been able to compete at higher levels before college. “Knowing that the people you’re riding next to are working hard and really care takes a lot of the ego out of the competition.”
