E&H Mass Comm Student Story: Colton Williams gets the scoop on Jenny Poston Bishop’s luck

This is part of a series of stories by members of the 2022 E&H Mass Comm 302 Class. This story is by E&H Sophomore, Colton Williams.

Even though 1993 graduate Jenny Poston Bishop has won a ridiculously wide array of prizes, she says that there is more to it than just plain luck.

Jenny has been a full-time math and special education teacher at Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tennessee for 28 years. She decided to pursue a degree in education after having once having her heart set on being a minister. “I always enjoyed school and I liked learning…” She continued, “I liked science but I liked physics better than anything else and so I just leaned in that direction.

With her hometown being 20 minutes away in Marion, it was an easy decision to choose to come to Emory & Henry. She said, “I visited Emory with a youth group when I was younger and I just fell in love with it.” Bishop met and also fell in love with her husband at E&H. While she was here, she was part of the sorority Kappa Phi Alpha and she played for Coach [Margaret] Hutson on the volleyball team.

Even though she works long hard hours being a full-time teacher, she squeezes a lot out of life that is just for fun. She loves bargain-hunting, concerts, travel…and entering contests. And Jenny is lucky. She doesn’t just win discount coupons; she has won concert tickets, money, free trips, her family dog was on a Pal’s commercial, and her personal favorite prize – the Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS) pace car. She won the 2014 Ford Mustang with a V8 engine (Jenny calls her Betsy) out of a rubber shark race for charity at the BMS.

She claims that the reason she is so lucky is because she “participates in life,” as she coined the phrase. She said, “Most of my life was spent fighting and working for what I have, nothing was handed to me.” She continued, “You have a choice: you can choose to let life happen to you or you can happen to your life…so you have to get out there and make it happen.”

Being two years from retirement, Bishop is staying positive and is excited to start her new chapter of life saying that she can do anything she sets her mind to. How’s that for a “winning attitude?”
