Student to Student Mentoring Makes a Difference

In partnership with Emory & Henry College, Communities In Schools of Southwest Virginia is working to connect mentors with elementary school students in the Meadowview area. These mentors are Emory & Henry students who have committed to being a consistent and compassionate presence in the life of a child. 

Prior to sending the mentors into the school building, they are provided with training that covers a variety of topics that are applicable to their role, including the power of developmental relationships and how these relationships can truly change the trajectory of a young person’s life. There are five core principles of the developmental relationships framework, each of which we believe to be vital to a successful mentor-mentee pairing: Express Care, Challenge Growth, Provide Support, Share Power, and Expand Possibilities. “Once training is completed, our mentors work with the Site Coordinator at the school to establish a schedule and become paired with a mentee. All we ask is that our mentors commit to weekly visits with their mentee. This may seem like a simple ask, but, as we always tell the mentors during training, for most students these visits will be the best part of their week” says Ryane Terry, community partner and program leader. They are currently working with the juniors and seniors at Emory. There isn’t one specific major or minor focus on recruiting to the program, the main objective is simply to make a difference in the life of a young person. The program training started in November, right before Thanksgiving. Three groups of students were trained throughout the 2021-2022 school year. The goal of the mentor program mirrors the mission of Communities In Schools, which is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The founder, Mr. Bill Milliken, always says that programs don’t change people, relationships do. “We truly believe that we can make an enormous difference in the life of a child through an effective mentor-mentee relationship. Additionally, I hope that the E&H students who become mentors will glean just as much from the experience as the students they work with,” explains Terry. This is a collaborative effort between Emory & Henry (specifically Leah Wilson, the Coordinator of Civic Life at the Appalachian Center for Civic Life & Megan Hamilton, the Coordinator of Civic Engagement Projects at the Appalachian Center for Civic Life), Communities In Schools of Southwest Virginia, and Washington County Public Schools (specifically Meadowview Elementary School). Terry says they are, “still in the very early stages of the program, but I am beyond thrilled at the response we have had from students who want to be mentors. I know college students are extremely busy, so the fact that they are willing to take time out of their schedules to make a difference in the life of a young person is incredibly moving.”
