Chaz Jones Says to Look for Great Government Jobs in SWVA/NETN

Chaz Jones says many young people overlook the opportunities for great government work that are right here in the region surrounding Emory & Henry.

Chaz is a Trade and Industry Analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Rich Valley native says he could kick himself for not taking better advantage of great entry level jobs in his home region. “We have so many great first-job opportunities that will get a person connected to a larger world of government jobs. Agencies like Homeland Security at the airport and the Virginia Department of Forestry are great places to start a career.”

For almost 3 years, Chaz has been with the U.S. Department of Commerce doing trade investigations, checking the health of supply chains, and collecting industry data. They look for vulnerabilities that could disrupt supply chains – like disruption impacts, cybersecurity concerns, manufacturing capabilities, workforce challenges, etc. “Covid disrupted everything. Supply lines have been more focused on efficiency and cost instead of resilience. So now we’re finding that what we needed was resilience. Hopefully if something like this happens 10-20 years down the road we will have learned enough from this process to be better ready for the challenge.”

He says he had some “great Emory & Henry professors” who encouraged him to look at international relations, so he completed a master’s degree in international affairs with a concentration in U.S. foreign policy and national security at American University. And he says he loves being the DMV (DC, Maryland, NOVA). “It’s very fascinating…and unique. I get to see people from all walks of life from all around the world.”

He was looking forward to this work leading to some really interesting travel, but the pandemic has gotten in the way. So he’s still mostly teleworking at the moment. “But I’m looking forward to being out in the world soon for the cool photo opps!”
