New Theatre Collective Presents Musical Version of Bradbury Short Story

by Billy Chandler

Only Human Theatre Collective will present as its inaugural performance a devised musical production of Ray Bradbury’s All Summer in Day at the McGlothlin Center for
the Arts at Emory & Henry College.

The show, which will be held in the Black Box Theatre, will begin at 7 p.m. July 21-23 and at 2
p.m. July 24. The event is being held in conjunction with the Virginia Highlands Festival with
support from the McGlothlin Center for the Arts.

All Summer in a Day is set in a classroom on Venus, where the rain never ends. The children of
rocket people who set up civilization on Venus, eagerly await the sun, which appears for two
hours every seven years.

As a piece of devised theatre, the production – including lyrics and dialogue – are adapted from
the Bradbury short story during rehearsals. “So this will be a never-before-seen production for
the audiences who attend this musical,” said Patrice Foster, director of the production.

“This musical is great for families and everyone who loves Ray Bradbury,” Foster said. “And it
will be fascinating for anyone who enjoys the process of playwriting and adaptation.”

Only Human Theatre Collective seeks to bring together theatre professionals and students. The
organization plans to continue presenting devised theatre with the aim of helping students not
only learn theatre performance, but also the creative process behind script writing.

In addition to Foster, the creative team for the musical includes Emily Grove, assistant director;
Alice Holmes, stage manager; and Kristy Bissell, music director and composer. The ensemble
includes Aubin Jefferson, Destinee Johnson, Tim Johnson, Kristy Bissell, James Randolph and
Urgyen Joshi.

Tickets for the production are offered on a pay-what-you-can basis and are available online at
ehc.edu/mca/tickets or by calling 276-944-6333.
