Largest Service Plunge Brought Engagement to the Community

Posted by Leah Wilson

New Emory & Henry College students spread across Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee to join in Service Plunge on Saturday, August 13. Service Plunge is a time-honored tradition at the College, with 25 years of history and many more to come. Organized by the Appalachian Center for Civic Life, teams of students and their faculty coordinators left campus on buses headed to various service locations, most of which represented a theme of their first-year courses.

“This was the biggest Service Plunge in E&H’s history,” said Coordinator of Civic Life Leah Wilson. “We sent over 400 students out to 20 different service sites throughout the community.”

The CORE 100 classes that gathered to participate in Service Plunge were;

  • “Banned Books,” with Dean of Student Success Travis Proffit at the Washington County Library
  • “The Mind, Body, Spirit, Connection,” with Coordinator of Civic Engagement Projects Megan Hamilton at the Marion Correctional Treatment Center
  • “Peace, War, and Christianity,” with Religion professor David Jackson and First-Year Academic Advisor Sam Davis at River’s Way in Bristol, Va.
  • “Hip-Hop: Comparison and the Art of Listening,” with ePortfolio Specialist and Bonner Scholar Coordinator Bradley Hartsell at Highlands Community Services
  • An Honors session with English professor Matthew Kelley at the Blueridge Discovery Center
  • “Food and Place” with Geography professor Dr. Ed Davis at the Emory & Henry College Community Garden on campus
  • “Welcome to the Internet: Social Media, its Evolving Language, and our new Unwritten Identities,” with Director of New Student Academics Mary Ellis Rice at YWCA
  • “How Long to Sing this Song: Culture & Community,” with Director of Appalachian Center for Civic Life and Bonner Scholars Program Scott Sikes at the Settlers Museum
  • “Dolly Parton: The Queen of Appalachia,” with Media and Communication professor Brent Treash with Caring for Our Community in Marion, Va.
  • “Life Is Strange: Taking Ownership of your Personal Journey” with First-Year Academic Advisor Sydni Leonard at United Way
  • “Our Backyard” with Coordinator of Civic Life Leah Wilson at the Damascus Trail Center
  • “Painted Faces: Love, Death, and Identity in Chinese Drama,” with World Languages professor Lucas Wolf at the Well Fields in Saltville, Va.
  • “We Don’t Need Another Hero,” with Jennifer Krouse at the Barns at Blue Mountain
  • “Sports Report: Mental, Physical, and Emotional Effects of Sports in Modern Society,” with Health and Human Performance professor Rebecca Buchanan in the Town of Glade Spring, Va.
  • “A Starbucks Society,” with Department of Media and Communication chair Dr. Tracy Lauder at the Harvest Table Farm
  • “Useful Stories and Useful Questions for Useful Lives,” with Civic Innovation professor Dr. Tal Stanley at Hungry Mother Park
  • “What is College? Interrogating an Institution,” with Director of the Library Ruth Castillo in the Town of Damascus
  • “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,” with Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion & Belonging John Halloway at Emory & Henry College’s Equestrian Center
  • Transfer Student sessions with Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Success Kyle Sensabaugh and New Student Experience Director Fred George with Emory & Henry College Athletics and at Salvation Army respectively.

For the first time since 2019, Emory & Henry College first-year and transfer students have engaged in Service Plunge, an opportunity for those new to the College to connect to the surrounding communities in meaningful ways and reflect upon the impact that they’ve had. Students participating in Service Plunge trimmed garlic and planted broccoli at the campus community garden, engaged with community outreach at the Washington County Library, participated in regional environmental care and much more.

The Appalachian Center for Civic Life strives to build a nationally distinct civic engagement and education program, equipping students as agents of social progress in our region, nation, and world. “Our hope is that students walk away more connected to this place outside of the walls of Emory & Henry College’s campus, more connected to their professor and each other, and more aware of what service means and why it is important,” said Wilson.

  • Students work in the Emory & Henry College Garden during Service Plunge.
“Our hope is that students walk away more connected to this place outside of the walls of Emory & Henry College’s campus, more connected to their professor and each other, and more aware of what service means and why it is important,” said Coordinator of Civic Life Leah Wilson.
