Southwest Virginia Museum Experience Seeks to Promote Area History with Emory & Henry College

This summer, Emory & Henry College Appalachian Center for Civic Life (ACCL) facilitated a networking event for the museums in Southwest Va. at the Homestead Museum in Wytheville, Va.

This and future events are part of a larger initiative called the Southwest Virginia Museum Experience, which started in 2020 when its founder Jim Cox, board member of the Museum of Middle Appalachians, reached out for aid. Later in 2020 the ACCL partnered with Friends of SWVA, who helped the group apply for and receive a $10,000 grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation to fund a fully rebuilt and redesigned website (https://visitswva.org/museums/) with access to 43 museums’ information.

The Southwest Virginia Museum Experience now seeks to increase its promotion of the rich cultural history and heritage of the area with updated marketing, branding, attention to past successes and plans for the future. The main goal in all of the Southwest Virginia Museum Experience’s endeavors is to assist with revitalization and to steer more people to the varied museums in the region.

To move collaboration efforts forward among the museums in our region a steering committee has been formed with representatives from Museum of Middle Appalachians, Birthplace of Country Music, William Preston’s Smithfield, Wytheville Museums and the students and staff from ACCL, which includes Coordinator of Civic Engagement Projects Megan Hamilton, two history students, a student employee and multiple classes involved in both research and marketing efforts. The steering committee is currently working on hosting another networking event for this December in order to delve deeper into the challenges that exist with the region’s museums.

The Southwest Virginia Museum Experience is an effort that is working toward not only boosting interest in the area’s history and culture, but giving an updated means of appreciation for the region’s museums in our modern times. We are continually developing ways to provide access to resources and expertise to help the museums survive and thrive.
