Getting Back to Giving Back

After a long break, Service Plunge has returned as part of orientation week!

Due to COVID, this tradition was put on hold for three years with the last Service Plunge being in Fall of 2019. This break didn’t hold E&H back as the 2022 Service Plunge being the largest one yet. Over 400 first year and transfer students participated at twenty different service sites. Each service activity is geared towards students’ core class objectives. Activities consisted of visiting a local prison, cleaning up the sand volleyball court on campus, assisting nonprofits, like United Way, and much more.

Students and staff who visited the Marion Correctional Treatment Center, state the experience was “humanizing and humbling and a great way to learn about mental health and wellness.”

While visiting United Way, a foundation that mobilizes the community and provides support for education and financial abilities, volunteers returned with a deeper understanding of their CORE 100 class and a closer bond to their classmates. These early connections made outside the class made a positive impact in the discussion in each class. One first year student said the event helped promote healthy classroom behavior because “CORE classes are filled with heavy topics. Being able to connect with my classmates that day established that bond with not just with our classmates, but with our professor as well”.

After the successful Service Plunge, students and staff are energized for the semester ahead and Emory & Henry will continue to reap the benefits of our community connections in and out of the classroom.
