Rock Castle Home-Telling the Story of Place

On October 17th the showing of Rock Castle Home displayed the hard work of Charlie Thompson with his award winning documentary.

Thompson is an Emory & Henry Alumni, class of 1979. Now part of the Duke University Faculty, he shared his documentation of a lost community. Rock Castle was a displaced community due to the building of Blue Ridge Parkway. The documentary covered Rock Castle’s history from the indigenous people to their more contemporary lifestyle. Living on the edge of Patrick County, the community members strive to keep their story relevant and share the importance of their history.

For the October 17th event people gathered to watch the 2021 documentary and afterwards participated in a live interview with Charlie himself and two of the featured musicians in the film. The Appalachian Center for Civic Life is proud to support this event as it displays the center’s “core values that place is more than a location on a map. It is a defining force that can help us understand our place in the scheme of creation,” according to Tal Stanley the Resident Scholar for the Citizenship of Place.
