E&H Has New Face on the Web

Emory & Henry College launched a new college website on Feb. 14, 2018. The Valentine-themed launch party was held in the Board of Visitors Lounge, where President Schrum flipped the switch from the old to the new symbolizing the site going live, while dozens of students, staff and faculty looked on.

The site has been in the works for a year, after administration officials signed a contract for the complete site overhaul with White Whale, a web design company based in California.

“From the beginning, the White Whale team described the process as growing a garden — it is a process that is constantly evolving,” said Tracy Lauder, co-project team leader and director of the Ampersand Center.

Lauder and Matt Crisman, former director of admissions, co-chaired the project team, which met weekly with White Whale representatives as the new navigation was formed and the design created. The project team, which still serves in an advisory capacity, is made up of constituents from across campus representing admissions, advancement, alumni relations, marketing and communications, student life, and academics. Initial members of the team were Lauder and Crisman, Monica Hoel, Kyle Cutshaw, Jamie Smyth, Beth Funkhouser, Ed Davis, Hollyn Page, and now includes Anthony Graham and Jennifer Pearce.

Rachel Wilbur was hired on a temporary basis as web content coordinator to work as liaison between the company and the team during development and to coordinate efforts of those tasked with building their areas of the site. She is now a full-time employee in the Marketing and Communications Office, coordinating web content, photography and video to enhance the site.

“There have been so many people hard at work making this possible,” said Wilbur, who spent months training and meeting with individuals. “Some got the ‘full course’ and are able to do more complicated editing. It’s a team effort to keep it fresh and relevant for our audiences.”

Livewhale, the content management system, is one of the most user-friendly on the market. Adding and editing content into the templates set up by White Whale is very intuitive. Even adding video and photo galleries is turnkey. One of the most attractive features is the search function, which is robust and important to boosting Google analytics for the site. Another important feature is the ability to share stories across the site — which is essential to maximizing the marketing function of the website.

“Our website is the front door to prospective students and their families,” said Jennifer Pearce, E&H vice president of marketing and communications. “We intend to roll out the red carpet to introduce ourselves virtually, share our personality and tell why an E&H education is the best decision they will ever make. It’s become the number one marketing tool and we’re proud to share our stories and offerings and events on this new platform.”
