Claudia Duffy

by Leah Wilson

Describing herself as “Queen of the College,” Claudia Duffy worked at Emory & Henry from 1991 through 2014, serving most of those years as the Administrative Assistant to two Deans of Students.

Exemplifying Emory & Henry’s commitment to holistic education, Mrs. Duffy became a best friend, counselor, and advisor to students. When students were facing the consequences of poor choices, she became mom and dad to them as they sat across from her waiting to be called into the Dean’s office. Turning to the guilty ones, she would call them by name and ask, “What the hell were you thinking?”

She was a passionate supporter of the Washington County United Way’s annual employee drive, encouraging Emory & Henry employees to support nonprofits that cared for the world’s hurting people. An advocate for those who suffer from mental health issues, Mrs. Duffy served on task forces and committees that sought to meet the needs of our community’s most vulnerable people.

Mrs. Duffy taught by example how to practice creative, empathetic, and welcoming citizenship. For generations of students, she was the best of Emory & Henry.
