Internationally Renowned Opera Star Michael Austin to Highlight McGlothlin Center for the Arts Fall Season

The McGlothlin Center for the Arts at Emory & Henry College proudly presents an extraordinary evening of opera featuring the illustrious international tenor Michael Austin. The much-anticipated event is scheduled for Sunday, October 15, at 3 p.m., at the prestigious Kennedy-Reedy stage in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. This performance not only marks a high point in the McGlothlin Center’s fall season but also serves as a testament to the institution’s commitment to excellence in the arts.

Michael Austin, a 1975 graduate of Emory & Henry College, has carved an indelible mark in the world of opera, particularly for his exceptional portrayal of Otello. Austin, one of the few African American tenors to have embodied the iconic role, has garnered acclaim for his powerful performances as the dark Moor. His artistry has resonated across continents, with notable appearances in renowned opera houses and festivals worldwide.

In July and August 2012, Austin delivered fifteen riveting performances of Otello at the Festival Belle Ile en Mer in France, earning widespread critical acclaim. His compelling rendition of Otello with the Knoxville Opera in April 2012 further solidified his reputation as a virtuoso. Austin’s diverse repertoire includes significant roles such as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Radames in Aida, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Gabriele Adorno in Simon Boccanegra, and the title roles in Wagner’s Parsifal and Gluck’s Alceste.

The accolades for Austin continue, with notable performances as Pinkerton in Berlin, Brünn, Prague, Metz, and Karlsruhe, as well as Turiddu in Regensburg. His magnetic stage presence has captivated audiences in St. Petersburg and Moscow as Narraboth in Salome, and in Basel and Bern as Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca. Austin’s talent also found expression in the world premiere of Philip Glass’ Akhenaten, marking his debut with the New York City Opera.

Emory & Henry College is not only privileged to host Austin’s exceptional talent but also to bestow upon him the prestigious Legacy of the Arts Award. This award, presented for the first time by the college, recognizes individuals whose extraordinary talents and contributions have elevated the institution’s reputation for artistic excellence. Austin’s legacy, both as an artist and a distinguished alumni, embodies the spirit of this honor.

A native of Wytheville, Virginia, Michael Austin’s musical journey began at Emory & Henry College, where he cultivated his passion for opera. He continued his education at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and the Juilliard School of Music, further honing his craft. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts, Austin was conferred with the title Doctor of Fine Arts by Emory & Henry College in June 2005.

Recent highlights in Austin’s career include a 54-city European tour of “Das Lied von Der Erde,” alongside acclaimed mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fassbender, and triumphant performances as Otello in prestigious venues such as Prague National Theater, Warsaw State Theater, Hamburg State Opera, Vienna State Opera, and Belle Isle en Mer Festival in France.
