Historic Carriger Hall Transformed: Emory & Henry College Celebrates the Grand Reopening of the School of Business

Emory & Henry College proudly inaugurated its transformed historic landmark, Carriger Hall, as the new vibrant home of the School of Business in a special ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Friday, October 13, 2023. 

Originally constructed in 1904 with a generous $25,000 gift from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, Carriger Hall’s rich history and architectural significance have been meticulously preserved in its grand renovation, making it one of the most technologically advanced and innovative buildings on campus. The second phase of the building, which was the eastern wing and center lounge, was constructed in 1908.

“I am grateful to our Board of Trustees and the senior team who believed this building was worth saving and engaged in intentional and tough conversations in 2019-2020,” said John W. Wells, president of the College. “So many of us planned and created the map to restore this to house the School of Business. As we grow into a University, this is precisely what is needed to propel us forward.”

At the heart of the celebration is the compelling history of Carriger Hall, which embodies a tale of resilience, transformation and educational excellence. Originally intended as an academic building, the initial funds provided by Carnegie were redirected towards student housing under President Waterhouse’s direction. Carriger was known for decades as a “student home,” accommodating up to 60 students with modern conveniences.

The name “Carriger” pays homage to Herbert M. Carriger, President Waterhouse’s stepson, renowned for his unconscious modesty and dedication to the college community. The building was dedicated in his honor on January 31, 1909, a legacy that lives on within the newly renovated Carriger Hall.

Mark Nelson ’84, President and CEO of First Bank & Trust, an organization that significantly impacted the ideation, renovation and completion of Carriger Hall, noted the many individuals who are successful graduates that are now working with First Bank & Trust. “All [15] of these individuals have and continue to be a part of our locally owned bank that was founded in Lebanon, Virginia and remains headquartered in Southwest Virginia and are proud of the relationship with Emory and the education received that allowed them to work and live in our great communities,” Nelson said.

The transformed Carriger Hall is a testament to Emory & Henry College’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation. The $5 million renovation resulted in 2,200 square feet of light-filled space now facilitates peer-to-peer learning in which 2,000 square feet are dedicated to corporate events and presentations for industry executives. An additional 300 square feet have been reserved for distance learning, with green rooms and Zoom facilities. Carriger Hall boasts eight breakout rooms and a fully-glassed executive boardroom, ensuring a dynamic, collaborative learning and professional development space.

The Dean of the School of Business, Emmett Tracy, remarked, “A little over three years ago, I sat with President Wells and Provost Puglisi, and we made a commitment to each other and this community to build business programs that are relevant to the world of work and are entrepreneurial and progressive and would help our student population grow, thrive and go forward to make an impact in the region and the world.” Tracy continued, “We committed to do more than open doors but to support the talented professionals who would walk through those doors with us and our young people.”

Technologically, Carriger Hall leads the way on campus. Equipped with advanced audio-video systems, the building supports the recording of academic sessions and the delivery of hybrid learning experiences. Eight rooms are fitted with cutting-edge camera technology, enhancing online and distance education initiatives and ensuring that Emory & Henry College remains at the forefront of modern educational practices.

Notably, Carriger Hall comprises two primary classrooms capable of accommodating more than 200 students daily, providing a spacious and engaging atmosphere for learning.

Mills Becouvarakis ’24, a current student-athlete and President of the Business & Investment Club at Emory & Henry, stated, “I know this investment will offer a return on that investment ten times over, and I hope it will impact the lives of hundreds of students following in my footsteps. The experience of being taught by world-class faculty with a challenging academic curriculum housed in this beautiful space is undoubtedly one of the jewels of the crown of Emory & Henry College.” “In addition, with support from the van Vlissingen Center for Career and Professional Development, we chartered a new club, the Business & Investment Club,” he continued.
