Emory & Henry College ROTC Hosted a Successful Food Drive for Faith in Action with 2,620 donated items

Emory & Henry Army ROTC hosted a food drive on the Emory & Henry College campus from Thursday, September 7, 2023 to Friday, October 6, 2023. Emory & Henry and the ROTC program at UVA Wise were challenged to a friendly competition to see which school could collect the most donations.

Donations of non-perishable food items from the Emory & Henry community were accepted at the Army ROTC office in the Van Dyke Center. A total of 2,620 donated items from Emory & Henry were collected for Faith in Action in Abingdon, Virginia. Emory & Henry was announced as the winner of the food drive competition between UVA Wise at the Southwest Virginia Bowl on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

“The food drive delivered over 4,000 food items to Southwest Virginia families in need,” said Michael Swartz, ROTC and Veteran Support Specialist at Emory & Henry College. “The generosity of the communities of both colleges helped fill that void.” In addition to donations being accepted on the Emory campus, ROTC cadets worked with local stores to set up donation boxes.

“The plan is for the food drive to be an annual competition between the ROTC programs at Emory & Henry and UVA Wise,” stated Swartz.

The Army ROTC program at Emory & Henry College, in partnership with East Tennessee State University, provides a path for students to the United States Army while working towards a degree.
