Contracted with the Army
Emory & Henry held its fifth contracting ceremony in September honoring Cadet Thomas Peery ’25.
Peery, a third-year student from Chilhowie, Virginia, majoring in religion and a member of the Virginia Army National Guard, took the oath to serve in the United States Army during the event. Contracting marked his commitment as a future leader in the military, guaranteeing him the rank of second lieutenant (2LT) upon graduation. The ROTC program, reinstated at Emory & Henry in 2018 through a partnership with East Tennessee State University, had commissioned three officers and engaged ten students at the time, with more expressing interest. President John W. Wells acknowledged the significance of the day as Peery embraced this pivotal role. LTC Jared Powell, professor of military science at ETSU, expressed confidence in Peery’s readiness to represent himself, Emory & Henry, Southwest Virginia and the United States Army with distinction as a commissioned officer.
