President Honors E&H as Nationwide Leader in Service Learning

The Corporation for National and Community Service has recognized Emory & Henry College as one of the top service-minded educational institutions in the nation.

This year, Emory & Henry was honored in two categories, general community service and education community service. This recognition marks the sixth consecutive year that Emory & Henry College has been named to the Honor Roll.

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes schools that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities. Emory & Henry’s selection to the Honor Roll is recognition from the highest levels of the federal government of its commitment to service and civic engagement.

In the education category, Emory & Henry was honored as a finalist, placing it among the top five schools or colleges in the nation on the Honor Roll. Winners in this category are institutions that have made a commitment to improving educational outcomes for children and youth in pre-kindergarten through undergraduate education, engaged in service that addresses school readiness, strengthens schools, addresses early warning indicators such as attendance and behavior issues, boosts high school graduation rates and helps to prepare youth for college success.

The college was recognized “with distinction” in the category of general community service. The general community service category recognizes institutions that have made a commitment to improving the quality of life of off-campus community residents, particularly low-income individual, and are engaged in service that addresses education, health, economic opportunity, the environment, disaster preparedness or other human needs including support for veterans and military families.

In 2010, Emory & Henry was named one of only six institutions from the national Honor Roll to receive the President’s Award, the highest national recognition for service learning. In 2011, Emory & Henry was recognized as one of 11 finalists for the President’s Award.

According to Dr. Tal Stanley, director of the Appalachian Center for Civic Life, Emory & Henry is distinctive in part because the College asks its students and employees to demonstrate every day the relevancy and importance of its mission to the people and places of Southwest Virginia and beyond.

Service Leader

Emory & Henry is the only college or university in Virginia to ever win the President’s Award and one of only a few institutions nationwide to win the award or be named a finalist for multiple years.

In addition to the President’s Award and placement on the Honor Roll, Emory & Henry has received other national recognition for its service learning. Emory & Henry College’s continued recognition for service bears witness to the strength and legacy of this institution’s historic commitment to educating and equipping an effective citizenry for the American republic, according to E&H President Jake Schrum.

These recognitions remind us once again that Emory & Henry College is a community that embraces the challenge to serve. Service is the centerpiece of so much of the work that takes place here, and I am proud of the way that our students, faculty, staff and administrators answer the call to do more for those in need throughout our region.
